Terracotta pots: A story written in clay

There’s a quiet kind of magic in a well-crafted pot. It can turn a balcony into a garden, a windowsill into a sanctuary, a house into a home. Before we take you back to where Bergs Potter began — in a small Copenhagen ceramics shop in 1942 — we’d like to share why our heavy terracotta pots are still chosen by plant lovers today. Designed to help greenery thrive and spaces breathe, they’re crafted with time, skill, and care. Handmade in Europe. Made to last for generations.

Heavy, robust terracotta pots from earth to windowsill

We use premium, high-fired Galestro clay from Tuscany — rich in minerals, naturally porous, and full of character. Prized for centuries by artisans, this clay nurtures healthy plants while providing exceptional durability.

Each pot is fired at very high temperatures, making it frost-resistant while maintaining its natural breathability. Tiny pores in the clay allow roots to take in oxygen and release excess moisture, preventing root rot and keeping soil balanced. Unlike plastic or metal planters, terracotta regulates temperature naturally — cooling roots in summer and insulating them in winter.

Wonderful beauty that grows over time

No two pots are identical. And that’s the point.

Each terracotta pot from Bergs Potter is crafted by skilled artisans who handle the entire process — from shaping to drying to finishing — with care and tradition. Whether formed using plaster moulds, metal forms, or turned on a wheel, every pot carries subtle signs of human touch: a soft curve, a fingerprint in the clay, a shift in hue.

These are not imperfections — they’re the unique marks of traditional pottery, and part of what gives each pot its life and character.

With time, your pot develops a rich patina. Summer sun may leave freckles, while rain deepens its earthy hues. Like a well-worn chair or favourite linen, each pot becomes more beautiful with time, because it’s real and alive in its surroundings.

A collection of timeless design, season after season

Inspired by historical forms, Nordic simplicity, and contemporary aesthetics, our terracotta pots are quietly iconic.

From the elegant Københavner Pot to the sculptural Helena or minimalist Emilia, every design is made to last — visually, physically, and emotionally. Shapes are crafted for both beauty and function: shallow pots suit herbs and succulents, while deeper planters give room for trees and shrubs to flourish.

Some designs draw from centuries-old originals, while others emerge from collaborations with designers who share our values.

The Simona pot nods to vintage garden traditions with its soft fluted edges. Julie, created by Italian craftsmen, blends timeless elegance with Scandinavian simplicity. Bold and architectural with clean lines, Pantheon adds sculptural structure to modern outdoor spaces.

Made to weather time

In summer, terracotta helps regulate root temperature beneath green leaves. In winter, it tolerates frost — when elevated and properly drained.

High-fired clay resists cracking and endures decades of use in all seasons when properly cared for. Matching saucers, sealed with silicone, make indoor watering safe and clean. Outdoors, simple steps like elevating pots off frozen ground and draining or removing water-filled saucers protect them year-round.

We offer seasonal planting and winter care guides to help you keep both pots and plants thriving, reflecting our commitment to craftsmanship and attentive service.

Clay that speaks your language

For homes shaped by slow living and deliberate choices, terracotta feels like a natural companion.

Its earthy, uncoated finish blends seamlessly into diverse spaces — softening modern interiors, adding warmth to rustic gardens, and grounding busy terraces.

Whether holding wildflowers on a balcony, vines climbing a garden wall, or citrus trees in a conservatory, these pots quietly invite attention. They are made to belong — in any style of home, indoors or out — while letting plants take centre stage.

More than pots: Environments for life

Every curve, every saucer, every line serves a purpose.

Our pots are more than containers. They are environments designed for thriving plants. Each includes a drainage hole to prevent waterlogging and a matching saucer for clean indoor use.

The porous, breathable clay balances soil moisture and supports strong root systems. High-temperature firing makes the pots frost-resistant and long-lasting. These details, refined through generations of craft, make a real difference: healthier roots, stronger leaves, and vibrant growth season after season.

Terracotta pots for your garden and your living space

Our raw terracotta pots are as adaptable as they are beautiful.

They range from small, shelf-sized pots to large statement planters for gardens and terraces. With proper planting — using drainage layers, elevated feet, and winter protection — these pots excel indoors and out, even in cold climates.

Matching saucers keep indoor watering safe, while high-fired clay withstands the elements outside. Our seasonal guides help you prepare for everything from spring planting to winter frost-proofing, ensuring lasting health for your plants and pots.
