Why We Use Italian Terracotta
Our terracotta pots are made from premium Italian clay, rich in minerals and with a naturally porous structure. The clay allows air and moisture to pass through the walls of the pot, helping plant roots breathe while allowing excess moisture to evaporate.
The natural composition of the clay also means that colour and appearance can vary from one pot to another.
How Our Terracotta Pots Are Made
Making terracotta involves several stages, from shaping and drying to firing and finishing. Throughout the process, factors such as the composition and moisture of the clay, humidity, kiln temperature and the position of the pot in the kiln can influence the final result.
Our terracotta is fired at temperatures from around 1020°C, giving the pots strength and durability. Many of our pots are finished by hand, and subtle traces of the making process may remain visible on the finished piece.
Natural Colour Variations & Patina
Part of the character of terracotta lies in the subtle differences from one pot to the next. Differences in colour and texture, naturally occurring mineral marks or freckles, and subtle traces from shaping and finishing all tell something about the material and how the pot was made.
With use, the surface may also develop a patina. Naturally occurring minerals and salts – from the clay itself as well as from soil and water – can become visible on the surface over time. The appearance and development of the patina will vary depending on the pot and its surroundings.
These variations and changes are natural characteristics of the material and craftsmanship and do not affect the quality or function of the pot.
Why Terracotta Is Good for Plants
The porous structure of terracotta helps create a healthy environment around plant roots by allowing the soil to breathe and excess moisture to evaporate.
All our raw terracotta pots have a drainage hole to help excess water escape.
How to Clean & Care for Terracotta
Our terracotta is made for both indoor and outdoor use. Clean with warm water and a soft brush when needed. Avoid harsh cleaning agents.
When used indoors, always use the matching saucer and take appropriate precautions to protect delicate surfaces from moisture. For more information, visit Saucers & Water Protection.
