The Rise of the Potted Summer Garden

a Bergs Potter Journal post
A garden is rarely just a garden. It is a series of spaces—places to move through, to pause in, and to return to over time. This journal explores the idea of the potted garden: a way of shaping outdoor spaces using pots—not only to support plant growth, but to define structure, guide movement, and create atmosphere.

Forget-me-nots in quiet bloom, softening the garden path in our Celeste pot.

As the garden settles into summer, it begins to exhale. Paths soften beneath quiet steps. The greenhouse stands open, filled with layered greens. Light shifts between sun and shade, and the garden takes on a slower rhythm.

Rather than one open surface, the space unfolds in smaller scenes. A pot placed along a path becomes a point of pause. A grouping near the greenhouse creates a sense of presence. A single elevated piece draws the eye and anchors its surroundings.

Among tulips and greenery, everything begins to bloom.

Two pots placed together can frame an entrance or mark a transition between areas. A small group creates a more defined and layered setting. Even a single pot, placed with care, can define a space on its own.

Pots also introduce flexibility. They can be moved as the light changes—into full sun, partial shade, or shelter—allowing plants to thrive where conditions are right.

Nasturtiums spill gently over the edges of terracotta pots. Geraniums and herbs settle into sun-warmed corners.

Celeste moves effortlessly between roles. During the colder months, it serves as a side table indoors, with the saucer doubling as a lid. In summer, it moves outdoors—transforming into an elevated planter and a quiet focal point.

Terracotta at the centre of it all.

Five reasons to choose terracotta pots

1
Breathable material: Terracotta allows air and moisture to circulate, supporting healthy root development.

2
Natural moisture balance: The porous clay helps regulate water levels, reducing the risk of overwatering.

3
Temperature stability: Terracotta provides natural insulation, helping protect roots from temperature fluctuations.

4
Flexible placement: Pots can be moved as needed, following the sun, finding shelter, or brought indoors to protect plants during colder months.

5
Made for outdoor living: Frost-resistant and durable, terracotta pots are designed to withstand changing seasons and age beautifully over time.

A still life of clay and craftsmanship.
