For our first edition, we’re thrilled to introduce Sarah Bojesen, the creative mind behind the Instagram profile @Octoberdetails. Based in Denmark, Sarah’s Instagram feed reflects her passion for autumn and minimalism and her love for plants, which she nurtures in her cosy East Jutland home.

Q&A with @Octoberdetails – Sarah Bojesen

What is your name and Instagram profile?
My name is Sarah Bojesen, and my Instagram profile is @octoberdetails.

Where and with whom do you live?
I live in a tiny village in East Jutland with my husband and our two children.

What does your day-to-day work involve? 
After working as a stylist for a decade in both the fashion and interior design industries, I found the courage to explore new paths. These days, I work with children, which allows me to focus on building meaningful relationships in my everyday life.

I keep many hostas in pots so I can move them around throughout the year, adapting the garden’s look as the seasons change.

Autumn is a recurring theme in your feed. What draws you to this season, and how do you incorporate its mood into your garden and plant styling?
Autumn is my favourite season — it’s when I feel the strongest urge to reset and reflect, as I’m an autumn child myself. There’s a calmness that settles in the garden during this time, as plants begin to fade and say farewell to the summer. I love how the warm and cosy hues of the season allow me to see my garden in a different light. I often rotate my pots to match the changing colours of the leaves.

What are your favourite autumn plants, and how do you incorporate them into your garden? 
While hostas aren’t strictly autumn plants, they are an important part of my autumn garden. I love their colourful leaves, which light up in shades of orange and yellow. I keep many hostas in pots so I can move them around throughout the year, adapting the garden’s look as the seasons change. Their variety is one of the reasons they are among my favourite plants.

Your garden looks incredibly cosy, even though it’s small. Do you have any tips for gardening in small spaces? 
Thank you! We’ve optimised our garden by creating several distinct spaces with different functions. Dividing the garden into ‘rooms’ makes it feel larger than it is. Using various surfaces, like grass, gravel, and tiles, also creates the illusion of more space. I highly recommend using pots of varying heights, as they can be easily moved around to make the most of a small garden.

We’ve heard you have a beautiful potting shed! Could you share more about it and how it enhances your gardening experience?
Yes, our garden shed was a natural next step in organising our space. We needed a spot for bikes, toys, and garden tools, and I also wanted a dedicated potting area. We ended up building a two-part shed, and it’s my favourite place to be from early spring to late autumn. There’s nothing like working with plants in pure daylight, and even on rainy days, the sound of raindrops on the roof makes it a therapeutic space to be in.

Autumn is synonymous with warmth and cosiness. How do you style your garden and plants to reflect this mood? 
For me, autumn leaves are just as beautiful as blooming flowers, and I find that even flowers past their peak can still add to the overall atmosphere. Hydrangeas are a favourite of mine, as they continue to bring beauty and texture to the garden well into autumn and winter.

I have always been a creative person and have always been passionate about flowers. Before I started my photography journey, I used to paint a lot of still lifes with flowers. That’s why it was quite natural and obvious for me to photograph flowers and plants

Gardens and homes undergo magical changes as the late summer sun’s golden beams dance upon the lush vegetation in a true summer symphony. Nature’s beauty is at its peak this time of year, drawing us to plants and flowers. This lovely season lets us enjoy potted plants and herbs outdoors and bring scented blooms home. We bring the garden and greenhouse’s late summer beauty within with beautiful floral arrangements. Discover how to capture the late summer charm both indoors and out in our journal post.

Elizabeth Pot honours all women, ordinary queens, who sail against the wind with pride, grace, and strength. Like the late queen, this pot is sturdy and elegant. Gothic arches decorate its sides and form an imposing crown when flipped upside down.

A treasure vault of terracotta and gorgeous green creatures

Step into a beautiful refuge where the Elizabeth pot delicately holds plant delights basking in the sun. The pelargoniums add romanticism. The gentle aroma of their foliage recalls summer evenings. Winter care guide

Step by step guide of how to prepare your terracotta pots for the winter

Our raw terracotta pots are naturally frost strong due to the high quality of our unglazed clay. If properly taken care of, they can withstand many winters outside in the cold. It’s crucial to ensure the pot drains well and keep the hole at the bottom from getting clogged. If the hole gets blocked, water will accumulate, and when the temperature falls below 0°C, the water will freeze, causing it to expand, which may damage the pot.

1. Soil preparation

Make sure that the plants you leave outside during the winter drain well. When potting the plant, add a large piece of curved pottery over the small drainage hole to prevent rocks or dirt from becoming stuck in the hole. Fill the first quarter of the pot with drainage stones before adding soil. This will aid in the drainage of the soil.

2. Drain excess water

Remove the saucer so that excess water doesn’t freeze or damage the roots.

3. Pot feet

Place pot feet, small rocks, or wooden blocks beneath the pot to raise it at least 2 cm above the ground. This allows water to drain before it freezes.

4. Insulate

If you live in an area with frequent rain or sudden temperature changes and have a larger pot, we suggest protecting it from snow and rain. If it gets very cold, we recommend that you add an insulating layer of bubble wrap, fleece, or hessian. Please be aware that pockets of frost may occur, so it’s advisable to take precautions. Wrap the insulating material around the pot and secure it tightly with string to ensure complete sealing.

5. Shelter

Make sure the pot is in a protected area, like against the wall of your house, porch or balcony. To avoid any potential cracks or marks when they freeze, it is best not to move your pots around during the winter.

A Danish Queen in a Swedish rectory

In a charming Swedish rectory from 1863, Emelie Wrangmo has welcomed Bergs Potter’s Daisy, a Danish queen of elegance, into her historic home. Renovated with love and respect for its origins, the rectory pairs beautifully with the timeless allure of Daisy’s slender design. Discover how this majestic series complements Emelie’s passion for period details and adds a touch of royal beauty to every corner. The idea that several generations have left their mark on the house made Emelie fall for the place. She and her family, including her husband Andreas, their three children, a golden retriever, and two cats, have since 2012 put their own touch and memories into the historic building. Emelie’s attention to detail and a nose for period features resulted in an instant crush on the Daisy series.

Since the day I first laid my eyes on Daisy, I have absolutely loved her.

An elegant fit for a mid-1800s house

Emilie appreciates the elegance and ‘flow’ of the Daisy pot and how it fits perfectly into their mid-1800s home. With a trained eye for period details and style, she carefully chose the decorative green foliage for the old rectory.

Designed by Bergs Potter, our Daisy series symbolises the strength, elegance, and classical lines of the Queen of Denmark. The name and design of the series also refer to the family of perennial daisies as it embodies the grace, and simple beauty of the eternal flower. Photo: Emelie Wrangmo.

Daisy brings an extra level of loveliness to our interior both when it comes to the raw and the glazed styles. They are absolutely beautiful by themselves or together, with or without plants as an interior design detail.

Emelie’s interest in gardening has grown considerably since she moved into the vicarage. However, she is still keen on creating a lightly cared for garden that does not create stress or pressure for it to be perfect. She has an important job in shaping her young pupils and inspiring them to become confident human beings, and she also has her own large family to prioritise. A small potted garden on the front porch of her orangery makes the task of gardening manageable.

The glazed Daisy pot and vase are inspired by our elegant and creative Queen — in colours suitable for a royal.

It is well known that Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark is fond of strong colours. As a pot, she is covered in luscious emerald green glazing and is one of few in Bergs collection with neither drainage hole nor saucer. As a vase, she comes in both emerald green and amber yellow.

Like Emelie’s beautiful 18th-century rectory, Daisy is ready to conquer interior and exterior spaces that call for beauty and authenticity.

Potted plants are a great way to bring the freshness of a garden into your home or to create a small herb or vegetable garden on your terrace or backyard. The great thing about growing plants in pots is that you can choose plants that are well-suited to your taste and move the pots around to find the best sunlight conditions.

Easy-peasy pea plants

A fun and fast-growing creature is the pea. Sow the pea seeds about 5 cm deep in the pot. Water thoroughly and place it in a sunny spot. If needed, support the pea plants to climb on and watch as they grow and produce sweet, delicious pods. And if you cannot wait for the pods, the shoots and leaves of pea plants can be eaten as a delightful and crispy vegetable green.

Strawberry: A delicious addition to the outdoor space

Strawberries in terracotta pots are another tasty and decorative plant for your outdoor area; they even look great as an edible table decoration. These juicy and delicious berries are not only simple to grow but also adaptable and can be grown in clay pots. Now is the time if you want to start your own portable strawberry patch.

The best time to plant strawberries is in the spring or early summer when the risk of frost has passed. When selecting a pot, choose a large diameter to provide enough space for the plants to grow and develop their roots. Soak the terracotta pot for an hour or more before planting. Keeping the soil moist is crucial for the plant’s success. With a little patience and care, you’ll be enjoying the yummy taste of fresh strawberries right from your own patio or balcony.

Five-step-guide to choosing terracotta pots

Terracotta is a clay-based material with numerous qualities that is great for plant pots. The name “terracotta” comes from the Italian words “terra” (earth) and “cotta” (baked). When choosing terracotta flowerpots, there are a few factors to consider:

1. Porosity

Terracotta is a porous material which helps with proper drainage and ventilation for the roots of your plants. This means that excess water can be absorbed, reducing the risk of overwatering.

2. Size

Ensure that the pot is the correct size for your plant, allowing for adequate growth. Plants with shallow roots need taller pots to reach deeper into the soil to find water and nutrients. This helps the plant grow stronger and healthier.

3. Drainage

Ensure the pot has sufficient drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating and causing root rot.

4. Style

Terracotta pots are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs to suit any aesthetic, both indoors and out.

5. Quality

Look for terracotta pots made from high-quality, durable clay that has been fired at high temperatures for extra strength.

Scandinavian Silhouettes

The minimalistic, modular Hoff collection has found a home in the whimsical and dreamy world of Creative Director Laura Short in Aarhus, Denmark. In a space designed with sleek shapes and a focus on light, Laura’s Scandinavian-inspired home perfectly complements the earthy hues and elegant glazes of the Hoff series. Discover how this collection transforms her living space into a sanctuary of style and creativity.

Laura is half-Danish and half-Dutch, and together with her English husband, the cosmopolitan couple has designed their living space with sleek shapes and sophistication. With a focus on lines, light and lightness, their home epitomises Scandinavian minimalism.

The Hoff collection has struck Laura’s razor-sharp graphical eye. She is particularly taken by the earthy colours of the pots and the beautiful coloured glazing that, in her opinion, will complement any plant. Laura loves flowers for their often incredibly striking yet delicate beauty, but she does not have particularly ‘green fingers’ herself. But even without any plants or flowers, the artfully crafted Hoff pots appear as sculptural objects on their own.

The combination of shape, solid craftsmanship, and first-class materials is evident in the stringently stripped-back modular structure, which fulfils the design’s stringency that is prominent in the Hoff series. The Hoff series is taking its offset in the raw, organic, natural clay and timeless glazes to add a splash of colour.

The series of first-class, raw terracotta allows roots to breathe and plants to thrive – and the creative spirit to flourish. The contrast between the rough clay and the soft, tender glazes on the cylindrical shapes, pleases the eye and stimulates all senses.

“A design that achieves a sense of timelessness but still catches the eye and brings daily joy” was the philosophy of Anne Hoff – the designer who created the Hoff series. The contrast in the composition between the very rough surface of the raw clay and the smooth glazed saucer makes the Hoff pot interesting to look at and invites its users to engage in playful combinations of contrasts and colours.

Apart from the series of flowerpots in premium raw terracotta, the series also features a line of fully glazed cachepots with no drain hole in colours matching the saucers from the flowerpot series and a variety of versatile candle holders.

A huge appetite for modern architecture, design, and arts keeps Laura’s artistic veins pumping. Travels, museums, books, magazines, photography, film, and nature itself inspire Laura to photography and creative works.

Laura’s philosophy is to spend time doing things you love and take energy from that. There are many worries, distractions, and troubles in our everyday lives, but she tries to focus all her attention on the things that matter the most.
