FAQ
About the products
What makes Bergs Potter’s pots unique?
Our pots are crafted with dedication to timeless design, artisanal craftsmanship, and quality materials.
Are Bergs Potter’s pots suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?
Absolutely. Our raw terracotta pots are designed for outdoor use, weathering beautifully with each season. However, our glazed ceramic pots are ideal for indoor use, as they’re not suitable for frost exposure. For tips on winter care, see our winter care guide.
Do Bergs Potter pots come with drainage holes?
Most of our pots are designed with a single drainage hole to encourage healthy plant growth by preventing water buildup and root rot. We also offer a few cachepots for those who prefer pots without drainage, but we always advocate for optimal plant health.
Are the pots frost-resistant, and how should they be cared for in winter?
Our raw terracotta pots are frost-resistant, perfect for outdoor settings. In contrast, our glazed ceramic pots should be kept indoors during the winter. When leaving the raw pots outside during heavy frost it is advisable to take extra precautions by ensuring they are kept dry and sheltered when possible. For detailed winter care, explore our winter care guide.
What materials are used in Bergs Potter pots?
We use different materials depending on the collection, such as Galestro clay for our raw pots and high-quality majolica clay as well as glazed stoneware. All raw saucers are treated with a gentle silicone seal to make them waterproof, so they can be used both inside and out.
How should I clean and care for my terracotta pots?
Cleaning your terracotta pots is easy — simply brush or wash away any dirt and let them dry. For more detailed care, visit our guide section.
Will my Bergs Potter pot change in appearance over time?
Yes, our terracotta pots will develop a natural patina that evolves beautifully over time — a sign of the pot’s natural material interacting with the plant. The colour changes are a result of salts and minerals from the soil and water percolating through the pores of the clay. This patina reflects the pot’s breathability and ability to absorb and release moisture, providing a healthy environment for roots to thrive. Many people cherish this look, as it captures the raw, timeless beauty of nature.
Are all Bergs Potter pots handmade?
Yes, each Bergs Potter pot is crafted by hand, showcasing the unique marks of its maker, whether wheel-thrown or mould-pressed. We have a deep respect for craft traditions and time-honoured techniques, partnering with skilled artisans to bring our designs to life. Most of our terracotta pots are pressed from moulds, with each trim carefully hand-carved. For our larger pots, premium clay is hand-pressed into massive moulds and left to dry slowly over several weeks, creating a sturdy foundation. These pots are then slow-fired at high temperatures for days, resulting in exceptional durability and resilience. Explore more about our process in our production section.
What is the difference between terracotta and glazed pots?
Terracotta pots are made from natural, breathable clay that allows for air and water exchange, ideal for optimal plant health. Our glazed pots, made from a ceramic or stoneware base, are sealed with a beautiful glaze, ideal for adding a decorative element to your indoor space.
How do I choose the right size pot for my plant?
We offer a variety of pot sizes to suit any plant or space. Large pots are perfect for outdoor use; smaller ones fit nicely on shelves, and we also have tall pots for plants with longer roots. As a general rule, choose a pot that’s 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) wider in diameter than your plant’s current root ball to allow room for growth. For plant-specific guidance, we recommend consulting your local plant shop or garden centre.
How can I tell if my terracotta pot is high quality?
A simple and delightful way to test the quality of our terracotta pots is to give them a sharp flick with your fingers. If the pot is high-fired and of the best quality, it will ring like a bell, showcasing its natural strength and durability. This distinct chime is a sign that the clay has been fired at high temperatures, making it strong and long-lasting. In contrast, lower-quality or short-fired pots produce a dull sound, and if the pot “thumps” rather than rings, it may indicate a crack. We’re confident that our pots will resonate with a beautiful bell-like chime, a testament to their craftsmanship and quality.

General Information
Where is Bergs Potter based?
We are based in Copenhagen, Denmark, with deep roots in tradition and craftsmanship. To learn more about our story, visit our history section.
What is Bergs Potter’s brand philosophy?
Since 1942, Bergs Potter has been devoted to crafting premium, timeless products where both plants and people thrive together in harmony. Our designs are created to last for generations, embracing nature’s beauty and simplicity. We believe that living with plants not only improves the quality of life but also brings serenity, reduces stress, and transforms our spaces. With every pot we make, we aim to nurture a thriving connection between people and plants, allowing life to grow and flourish.
What inspired the creation of Bergs Potter’s designs?
Our designs draw inspiration from a blend of classic aesthetics and Scandinavian simplicity, with each pot reflecting influences from royal gardens, botanical knowledge, and timeless flea market finds. Rooted in Danish design heritage, this legacy began with our founder’s son, Steffen Berg, who created pieces that transcend trends. Today, we work closely with both internal and external designers, as well as local artisans, to develop our collections — ensuring each design embodies beauty, longevity, and generations of craftsmanship. See our collections here.
How can I learn more about the history of Bergs Potter?
Our story began in 1942 with our founder, Victor Berg, who sought to bring life and colour to Copenhagen during WWII. Since then, we have dedicated ourselves to creating products that will add more colour and life to this world. For the full story, visit our history section.
Care and Maintenance
How do I ensure my plants thrive in Bergs Potter’s pots?
Our pots are crafted to support plant health. For the best care, ensure proper drainage, water as needed, and place in suitable lighting. See our plant care guide for additional tips.
What should I do if my plant’s roots start growing out of the pot?
If you notice roots growing out of the drainage holes, it may be time to repot. Choose a pot that’s slightly larger to allow for more room.
Do the pots require any special treatment before planting?
We recommend soaking your terracotta pot thoroughly — both inside and outside — before planting. This ensures the pot is fully drenched, allowing its natural colour to shift from light to dark. When your pot changes colour upon getting wet, it’s a sign that it can breathe, helping to create the best-growing conditions for your plants. This breathability allows moisture and air to reach the plant’s roots, promoting a healthy, thriving environment. For more tips, see our planting guide.
How can I prevent overwatering or underwatering my plants in your pots?
Our raw terracotta pots darken when they’re wet, offering a natural indicator for water levels. This colour change can help you gauge when it’s time to water again, keeping plants healthy.
Why does Bergs Potter recommend using pot feet for outdoor pots?
Using pot feet with outdoor pots, especially during harsh winters, is essential for proper drainage and protection. Our pot feet elevate the pot slightly off the ground, allowing water to drain freely and preventing frost bursts, which can occur when excess moisture freezes. Additionally, pot feet help protect the plant’s roots by creating a barrier that deters insects from entering the pot from below. Designed to complement our large outdoor pot collections, Bergs Potter pot feet offer a practical and stylish way to extend the life of your planters while keeping your plants healthy. See our collection of pot feet.
